Mary Annuciation

The Annunciation

I would like to start my sharing of experience about Mary with the greeting of angel Gabriel in the gospel of Luke 1:28; “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you”.  Notice that the angel didn’t mention the name of our lady?  Instead, the angel emphasized the salutation as “Hail, full of grace” or in Greek word “kecharitomene”; and not Mary, you are full of grace.  This is a clear evidence in sacred scripture, that Mary was indeed privilege and preserve by God with an absolute grace free from original sin.

As a Catholic Christian during the early 90’s, me and my entire family don’t have a deeper relationship with Mary.  We just know her as a typical human being that played a big part in salvation history.  Until a “great storm” came to my family.

It was August of 1996 when my younger sister May who was 18 years of age have had a seizure around 1:00 o’clock in the morning.  I vividly remember that her entire body is uncontrollably shaking and stiff.  Her eyes are apart and her saliva was bubbling.  It’s like witnessing a person with an epileptic condition.

The entire family were shaken and we don’t know what to do.  My mother is crying while she is embracing her daughter and shouting her name over and over.  I myself was shock and I felt my entire body was frozen.  I cannot move because it is my first time to witness such occurrence involving a loved one.

My dad came and carried my sister and we all run in the nearest clinic as we shout for help.  But it is an ungodly hour and everyone in the neighborhood is in a deep slumber.

My sister was given a first aid so that the seizure might subside.  Afterward, the driver came and drove the car and finally we arrived at the hospital.  The seizure continues and May is in a state of unconsciousness.

We stayed at the hospital’s intensive care unit for more than two months.  May remained in a comatose state and the only thing that kept her breathing is the respirator machine and continuous medicine given to her.   She was suffering from brain abscess meningitis, lung infection, her heartbeat and blood pressure are unstable because she was diagnosed with a Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and, when severe, the person is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases, the disorder is life threatening – potentially interfering with breathing and, at times, with blood pressure or heart rate – and is considered a medical emergency. Such an individual is often put on a ventilator to assist with breathing and is watched closely for problems such as an abnormal heart beat, infections, blood clots, and high or low blood pressure. (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke).

We all have a drooping spirit but I remain calm and kept my faith and trust in the Lord.  It was only I who is involved in a Catholic Charismatic Movement during those time and I am just starting to discover the richness of my Catholic faith.

Prayers and moral support from friends and relatives are outpouring and that situation made my family relationship close to one another.  For we cannot afford to lose another family member.

When a loved one is struggling for her life and you are witnessing that life and death situation face to face, which is a hairline; you can say all the good things and last minute goodbye straight from the heart.

Our heart is in total grief as we continue to see our sister May suffering from all the needles (intravenous) inserted in her vein.  The hospital already made us signed a waiver because my sister’s body is in need of the medicine for her to continue living.

We already accepted the fate of my sister’s condition as we prepare ourselves to let go of her.  We call a priest to give her the sacrament of the anointing of the sick to prepare her spiritually in case death will visit my beloved sister anytime soon.

September 11, 1996 when May became conscious.  She was so thin and suffering from bed sore.  The following day, the respirator was taken away from her mouth.  Usually, a patient who had a respirator machine for so long a time cannot manage to speak as the lung still recuperate.

Around 6:00 o’clock the next morning the family went to visit my sister at the ICU.  Everyone was so happy as we witness May alive and conscious as she continue to struggle to breathe without the aid of the respirator machine; at the same time we are sad because we still don’t know how long she will stay with us.

Mary Twin HeartsMay was looking to each and every one, looking at us like a 5 year old child.  As she opened her mouth and spoke in a very soft voice telling us all… “Someone visited me” … We all cannot hear her because her voice was so soft, so we asked her again… What did you say again sister?  She replied again with a very slow and soft voice… “Someone visited me today”.  With curiosity in everyone’s face, we asked her… Who visited you?  It is 6 o’clock in the morning and the visiting time in this ICU hospital is 9am.  May continued to speak animatedly as she disclosed to us in detail with a coarse and soft voice… like a child, she spiritedly shared with us…  “Jesus and Mary visited me today… Mary is so beautiful!  She is wearing a blue dress and a veil.  She is holding a white cloth like a handkerchief.  She walked close to me and she wipe my head, chest and entire leg and feet with the white handkerchief”.  We asked her again… How about Jesus?  Is he doing something?  May replied, none! “He is just standing at my feet, looking at me.  He didn’t utter a word but just looking at me.  He is wearing a red robe”.  We asked her again… How come they managed to get out in the ICU?  May replied, “I don’t know… Mary told me to sleep and I slept immediately.  When I opened my eyes, they are gone”.

We all laugh out loud as we don’t know what and how to react; if we will believe her or not.  Maybe she just had a dream or whatever.  Their are butterflies in our stomach because her story is a supernatural phenomenon. We are skeptic and at the same time, like Thomas the apostle, a man of little faith.  Nevertheless, we are thankful for that sharing and experienced of May at her death bed in her second day being conscious.

All the laboratory and other test was again repeated and monitored the same day that Mary and Jesus allegedly appeared to her.  The following day, mid-day, the doctors came and updated us with the result.  We are so astounded as the doctors declared that all the test are negative especially the Guillain-Barré.  One of the doctor is a Buddhist and he told us that what happened to my sister is indeed a miracle.

We never disclosed this to anyone else because this is a very sensitive issue.  Nonetheless, why keep this in secret since it made my entire family relationship better, close to one another and renewed.  Isn’t it a miracle of faith, hope and love?  We can now express the love and care in words and action that we never did before.  That situation created a great change with my family relationship; and we become to know Mary deeply as our mother and intercessor.  Moreover, our relationship with God through Mary became more profound as we all witness His merciful love and saving grace that heals.  Like in the ancient days, Jesus not only heals the physical deformities of the lepers and the blind but He heals the distortion and deformities of our soul.

Mary and Infant JesusWe started as a family to have a deep devotion to Mary, as we honor her as the mother of God.  Of course all the praises and worship belong to our Triune God.  But Mary, the mediatrix of all graces is truly a powerful channel to convince her son Jesus with our prayer petition.  It reminded me with her intercession in the wedding at Cana, as Jesus turned the water into wine.  That time, Jesus is not yet to perform his miracle but how can a loving son like Jesus decline the request of a loving mother?

Now, I am in the process to know more and more about her, that I may able to proclaim the profound beauty of our mother Mary. Since I am a child of God, therefore, she is my mother too!  She remained and witness all the joyful, sorrowful and glorious moment of her son Jesus.  As she continue to intercede for each of us who plead to her maternal protection, always leading us to her son.  Mary who carried the son of God in her womb for nine months.  She who nurse and taught our Lord Jesus Christ the incarnate word, the bread of life, who is the royal priesthood, all the unconditional love a mother can give to her child.  Truly, Jesus give life and walk the commandment given to Moses at Mount Sinai, that is to honor your father and mother.  So we Christians must honor the mother of God.  For Jesus himself give the highest honor to her Queen Mother.

In one of an autobiography book that I read about Martin Luther, the founder of protestant reformation was once a Catholic Agustinian monk, started the Lutheran church in 1517 A.D.  Luther once gave a homily 10 years after leaving the Catholic Church… as I quote his words… “We are the children of Mary.  Mary is the mother of Jesus and the mother of us all.  If Christ is ours, his mother therefore is also ours.  She, the lady above heaven and earth, here passes the woman who is raised far above all woman; indeed above all human race.  No woman is like unto thee.  Thou art more than an empress or a queen blessed above all nobility, wisdom or saintliness”.  Isn’t it ironic that today, most christian denomination degrade and ignore the mother of God?  Maybe they should be reminded with the words of their founder about Mary.

Moreover, the action tell again about Lucifer who was cast down from the ranks of heavenly being because Lucifer was full of pride.  Father Jose’ Fortea, in his work, Interview With An Exorcist, points out why Catholics look to Mary as an important ally in the struggle against demonic forces… Lucifer is the most perfect creature by nature; Mary is the most perfect creature by grace. Lucifer corrupted himself by disobedience; Mary sanctified herself by obedience.  Lucifer wanted to be king, refusing to served, and in the end became nothing; Mary wanted to be nothing, desiring to serve, and in the end was crowned Queen of Heaven.

Truly it is heaven to know that I am her son and she is my mother!  And my mother is a Queen!

Today, my sister May will celebrate her 40th birthday on November 2016.  A two decade of witnessing the powerful love of God through Mary.  She is now actively and effectively managing the financial affair of our family enterprise, a livestock agri-business.

As I unwind, let me share with you the classic Memorare prayer that I usually recite from the heart especially in time of need and doubt…

“Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me.

Amen”…. Mary, mother of all Christians… Pray for us.

Let me start my reflection on the eucharist by sharing a quote from the words by St. Augustine of Hippo… “ We have dark times ahead of us.  But you will be a light in the darkness, a light of love.  If you keep silent, keep silent with love.  If you speak out, speak out with love.  If you discipline, discipline with love.  If you forgive, forgive with love.  Let love take root within you.  For only goodness can arise from this origin”… Love.

In our modern world today, people are too busy with many things that we only have a very limited time to spend with family, friends and make a personal reflection of where we are heading in our life journey.

With our very busy lifestyle, most of the food we eat are instant.  To conform to one’s idea and be connected to a person is only a matter of clicking the “Like” button.  We get connected to people in an instant in a very shallow and virtual manner, their is no sense of a deep connection.

BouveretLastSupperSame thing that is happening when we go to mass every Sunday, we no longer know the essence and true meaning of the holy sacrifice whenever we commemorate the breaking of the bread that was instituted by Jesus Christ 2,000 years ago.

Because we are not aware of the immense power of the word we utter as we recite the vocal rituals and the exchange of sacred words between the priest and the faithful; that was pass on every generation through sacred tradition, their is no longer a deep connection to the one who loved us first whenever we attend the holy mass.

To some it is a Sunday obligation, to others a routine to perform.  To the fundamentalist, the eucharist is a symbolic sacrament to remember.  We forgot that we come and partake in the holy sacrifice because we deeply love and commit ourselves to our True Lover.  A commitment to love! To be one with God IN love … Love, who is God…

Most of us are not aware of what’s happening when a simple bread and wine transubstantiate into the true and real body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit given to his anointed priest in the sacrament of holy orders.

How I envy the participants of the 51st Eucharistic Congress held in Cebu City, Philippines with the theme Christ in us, our hope of glory.

I hunger to know deeply in the ordinary things that are hidden in the mystery of the Eucharist.  I want to understand and to experience the overwhelming and profound richness and meaning of the broken body of Christ, through listening and spiritual formation.

I intensely desire to listen to the talked given by Papal legate Charles Maung Cardinal Bo; Fr. Timothy Radcliffe; Rev. Robert Barron; Fr. Luciano Ariel Felloni and other speakers as they share their own personal experiences on the Eucharist and how it transformed their life to holiness and wholeness.

I see these holy people as living martyrs for Jesus because they witness and stand for the truth.  They speak and evangelize the truth. They live what is expected of them as disciples of the ancient Catholic Church.

As a lay person, I can only share my humble understanding on how I experience the unfathomable beauty of Jesus Christ hidden in the broken bread.

I confess that I am a sinner hiding in an angelic naive look, a modern hypocrite and a charming liar.  I own up being deceitful, manipulative and proud… a sinner, filthy and devastated.  And that is my own miserable truth.

original-prodigal-son

Just like the parable of the prodigal son, I rather go back to the house of my father, as I swallow my pride and serve him as one of his servant. However, in spite of my shortcoming, my father prepared a feast for me, embraced me and dress me with the finest robe. Making me realize how I am deeply loved.

It is a good thing to know that through Christ Jesus we can find hope and eternal salvation. His mercy is overflowing! He allowed my brokenness to surface for others to see His healing grace, mercy and love.  How amazing!  Again, quoting the words of St. Augustine, “God allow us to be lost in able to be found.”

Experiencing the merciful love of God in my filthiness and brokenness is truly redeeming!  It made me keep in touch with myself, my feet on the ground, slow to judgement and to realised that I have nothing to boast but only my nothingness in the presence of the Lord.

The desire to be holy is a lifetime struggle.  To be worthy to partake and be one with the true body of Christ in the most holy Eucharist is to recommit our baptism vow by denouncing sin and Satan with conviction.

As human as we are, we are inclined to concupiscence because of the original sin that we inherited from our first parent. We are weak whenever temptation knock in our door step. That even though we do our very best to abstain from sin, we find ourselves repeating the same sin over and over.  As St. Paul said in Romans 7:15, “For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.”…. very true and I hate it!

To arrive to holiness is to detach from our worldly attachment.  Especially to something or someone that is so precious in our life; in exchange to what is truly eternal and divine, which is the broken bread and blood of Christ, celebrated in all the ends of the earth.  A test of faith that God alone suffices.

Holiness entails sacrifice and mortification to experience detachment from all these gross worldly desire in its most painful way. It is only by the grace of God we can truly enter and be victorious with all the temporal desire that easily perish.  Small victories are pathway to holiness for us to create a stronghold to avoid the occasion of sin.

To strive for holiness is to guard our words, thoughts and action, in accordance of being a true disciple of Christ.

In my heart, I admit that I struggle everyday to be holy and to be an authentic martyr for Jesus.  But sin hinders the holiness I desire.

Like dark clouds that hide the moon from my sight, I cannot see the beauty of God clearly. But I know behind those dark clouds, the moon is there wherever I go.

God’s love is unconditional!  Unchanging! This simple thought is already a divine revelation.  It is a substantial bearing to make every effort to persevere and to be holy, where absolute comfort and security is in store for us.

sacrificiomisa3The real and true presence of God the Son, in the form of bread and wine that we receive in the holy sacrifice of the mass, is no doubt the sacred heart of Jesus that unite our soul and spirit in divine union.  How wonderful to know!  Amazing grace!

In my miserable state of being, my Jesus look at me lovingly; always with me, carrying me in my wounded and wrecked spirit.  He heals my broken soul unceasingly and forever so faithful even I am so unfaithful.

May we truly experience God’s love and mercy in the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist, where we receive every source of spiritual blessing, inspiration and hope.

In my very little knowledge in the mystery of God, I proclaim and believe that to be truly holy is to be sincere in all our ways; to be a witness to the living word of God; to experience being broken like the Christ crucified with a thankful heart; to live a life of poverty and chastity free from all worldly attachment,  so we can genuinely share the Christ in us … our hope of glory!

Communion Prayer

My Jesus,I believe that you are present in the holy sacrament.  I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you, never permit me to be separated from you.  Amen

Last week, I bought a very good book as a Christmas present for myself. The title is “In the Presence of My Enemies” by Gracia Burnham. It tackles the REAL story of faith, hope and love. And how God, in the midst of this long DARK NIGHT will come to restore and heal the broken SELF.

Based on a true story of an american couple Martin and Gracia Burnham, who spent their 15 years in the Philippines as a christian missionaries. They were held hostages by the Abu Sayyaf, a group of terrorist connected to Osama Bin Laden in the remote island of Basilan in Mindanao, southern part of the Philippines. The Burnham’s experienced a year of agony and strife in this remote and unexplored jungle.

Every chapter of the book made me cry as if I am there watching what was going on that time. Her presentation is so personal that you can feel yourself among them. I am so bless to know Martin (her husband) not personally of course but as how Gracia presented him in her book. That even I had no way to talk with him personally, he (Martin) imparted a great deal of faith and optimism in my being as I read every page of the book. What a deep person Martin was, a very grounded and down to earth guy, full of faith and courage in his heart. He just uplifted my soul in this earthly conquest.

As I meditated with what I am reading, I remember a bible phrase in my favourite Psalm23. Especially verses 4 to 6;

NIV Version*

[1]The Lord is my shepherd I shall not be in wantpsalm-23-edit
[2]He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters
[3]He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
[4]Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me ; your rod and staff they comfort me
[5]You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows
[6]Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

It is by God’s grace for the Burnham to endure this terrible ordeal. Not only experiencing the scripture in their spiritual journey BUT experiencing it literally in the jungle of Basilan. They realize more God’s power and constant care as the Good Shepherd.
Isn’t it that walking in the dark valley of death with your enemies will make your knees chill to death. I guess if I am in their situation I will surely die and wanted to immediately eject and pop out in the air. But God in His mysterious plan that we cannot see is always marvelous and perfect. His ways are profound and life changing. Even in the midst of the very limited resources and comfort… God comforted the hearts of Gracia & Martin.

In connection with these, when King David refer to a table in the presence of my enemies, the psalmist is not referring to a banquet table. I personally picture this table as a metaphor. A plateau high above the hills and the mountain where the sheep can graze and eat peacefully in green pasture. Even the enemies presence are everywhere, the Good Shepherd can see on the top of the hill the wolves below the high plateau. For sure, wolves are faster predator in lower ground but will have difficulty in such high level upland. I myself am a cattleman, and we usually bring our cattles in a higher ground with lush green pasture where they are stress- free. It is very important for this large animal to rest and eat well without fear, without the presence of anyone except the one shepherding them. Even cattles know their master just like the sheep.

On the other hand, the Burnhams are literally “in the presence of their enemies”. Can you picture the sheeps among the wolves in this scenario? Brushing their elbow side by side with the tyrant Abu Sayyaff is so horrible to imagine. Put God in that scenario and you’ll perfectly see His shepherding care and constant guidance.

During the rescue operation of the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines), Martin was shot in the chest and died. Gracia was shot in her right leg and survived the long nightmare. Watching her husband died as she kept her composure with what Martin have had told her… to be emotionally strong in such difficult times especially in an open fire.  Gracia kept silent and acted as one  who died in the firing confrontation between the AFP & the Abu Sayyaf, to survived and fullfil what Martin told her when they are still together.  It is so painful to imagine that the one you loved the most died beside you and the only thing you could do is to survive.  I cannot help myself but cry as I read that page in that very tragic chapter. It is given that someone usually must be a sacrifice for the many to see and witness more and more God’s overflowing love and mercy.

His steadfast and stubborn love for us is so perfect that we don’t understand the journey until we finally reach and see the outcome of His great master plan for us and for the many… For a small mind, a lost of life in a battle of good and evil is a misfortune. But however, for a man who is full of grace, yielding trust and grounded faith in the Lord, a lost of life that was live in accordance of forgiveness and love to his captors is a triumphant victory to celebrate. Because it was a life that was live to the full. Martin here is the true winner of the everlasting crown that have a great prize! As for Gracia, I guess, she will touch more souls in her earthly journey, with her very inspiring true to life story with these blinded and self-centered terrorist. Her cup will be filled with glory in God’s time, and for sure her experience with these savages made her a strong woman of faith and a living gospel of God’s salvation to humanity.

I believe that every individual relationship with God is unique. Whether your God’s name is Allah, your God’s name is Buddha, Jesus, Lord Ganesh, Shivah,Venus, the stars, the moon etc., or simply you are an atheist. LISTEN (read between the lines)… As long as YOU LIVE IN peace, YOU LIVE IN love and more love, and sharing these virtues and graces universally and ecumenically to everyone AND NOT EXCLUSIVE to your faith, without discrimination of the race, color of the skin and religion… THAT IS GOD! GOD IS WITH YOU! GOD IS THERE IN YOUR HEART… a harmonious and sound relationship with the creation of God who is ONLY ONE.
